Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti] Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to get a flawless score of 10 during an Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi, a Romanian gymnastics instructor who later became the coach for Comaneci, first discovered Comaneci at the age of six. The year 1969 was the first time she took part in the Romanian Junior Championships and finished 13th. She was awarded the championship in 1970. Her first competition in the international arena was in 1972 a pre-Olympic junior meet for the communist-bloc countries she took home three gold medals. Then in 1973 and 1974 she became an overall junior champion. At her first competitive event at the senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva, a Russian athlete, won five gold medals, as well with one silver.
